The 60s & 70s: Dropshipping before the Internet
Knew that dropshipping actually started before the internet?
It began its first push in the 60s and 70s, when mail order companies took advantage of mail order catalogues.
Mail order catalogues were obtained in the mail which advertised a variety of products through small booklets. You may order products directly from your catalogue by phone, and have it shipped to your door by the company.
Mail order companies such as JCPenney & Sears used this approach on a wide scale during this period. It proved very lucrative for them. But as they grew bigger, a problem started to emerge within their company.
Although the company rising rapidly, JCPenney & Sears’ struggled to keep up with the amount of consumer demand. And they realised they wanted a faster and more effective way to carry out customer orders.
JCPenney & Sears built fulfilment warehouses as a solution which was specifically designed to improve this process. This was close to what Amazon calls warehouses now called FBA (Fulfilment By Amazon).
Their main purpose was to store the bulk of huge inventory. And the major advantage was that individual products customers ordered could be quickly found and shipped out.
Even exclusive mail order companies such as Compared at the time discovered a big opportunity to use those warehouses.
They figured it would be cool to list the goods (in the warehouse) for sale at a mark-up price in their own mail order catalogue.
Then, when a customer ordered an item, Compared would buy the item from the distribution center, and then the warehouse would deliver the item to the address of the customer. This was how the model of ‘dropshipping’ developed. And that was pure brilliant!
Now this model has been called the first method of drop shipping on a ‘major-scale.’ Twenty years fast forward, and things began to change…
The 90s: Dropshipping & the Dot Com Bubble
It was here when the Internet came into being. Mail order companies graduated in ‘ecommerce’ stores from the mail order catalogues. And eventually the public was exposed to shopping online.
It took the customers a while to warm up to shopping online. Giving your credit card details online was deemed ‘shady’ back then.
People feared their details would be stolen, and thought that giving away important details over the phone was stupid. Although it was a well-known store.
But over time, as attitudes toward the internet changed, more people began embracing this new ‘virtual’ way of purchasing items.
With more people coming into the world of online shopping, the drop shipping ‘dot com’ bubble began to explode and the bubble began to grow.
The ‘dot com’ bubble was a time when fancy-named online stores popped out of nowhere and made HUGE promises to investors.
These online stores convinced investors that this new ‘thing’ called eCommerce would bring huge returns. The idea sold to investors, and invested millions of dollars on this promising investment.
One of these online stores, Pets.com, has been able to raise these investors millions of dollars.
But they never ended up profitably at the end of the dot-com era. And none of the investors returned good on their investment.
Things started taking a toll when dropshipping from US dropshippers, which had become much more expensive over time due to, increased demands for shipping. And so many of these stores went bankrupt by 2001, because they were unsustainable. And the bubble about ‘dot com’ burst.
The 2000s: The Rise of Amazon.com & eBay.com
While several firms were ‘iced’ in the dot com bubble, two were lucky enough to survive: Amazon and eBay.
Amazon and eBay were revolutionizing the way people could sell online. You did not have to go through the technical, costly process of creating and advertising an online store any more. Now you can list your items on their website and let them drive you the traffic!
This was a huge boom for dropshipping, as previously using dropshippers was very expensive.
Not only did the USA dropshippers charge a lot for their items, but they had to spend a huge amount of money during the development phases of the store and advertising. With no Facebook ads up until 2007, Google Ads, which was (and still is) very expensive, was the only real option to advertise.
But now, on behalf of individual sellers, Amazon and eBay advertised their website which meant dropshipping was now viable for anyone. Not just big companies.
2010-2018: The Chinese Revolution with Aliexpress, Shopify & Oberlo
2010 was the year when dropshipping was forever changed.
Previously it was complicated to work with Chinese dropshippers, which is why most individual dropshippers chose to work with dropshippers in the USA.
But Alibaba had released Aliexpress in 2010. Individuals could buy items from Chinese manufacturers and drop shippers through this website. And it was as simple as buying an item over a checkout from an online store.

Con # 3: Dropshipping Can Be A Logistic Nightmare
You might think that you can sit back and relax because the drop ship distributor does all the work you need. Unfortunately, you’ve got to deal with your base of customers.
You have to be the one who will answer all the questions. You cannot be the one to blame when an order does not arrive on time.
The biggest issue is that delivering the whole shipment to the end-user can be a logistical nightmare when you’re using multiple separate dropship distributors.
Both retailers will have varying delivery times, and from entirely different places will be delivered.
When a consumer orders goods from 3 separate retailers, they will ultimately receive three different shipments at different times.
When an order is especially time-sensitive and needs to be hurried, you’ll need to make sure all the distributors will produce the product on time.
In effect, you stake your online store’s reputation and link up with all of your dropship distributors in a single chain. When only a sole distributor is ineffective, then your online store would represent negatively.

Sadly you have so little influence over the customer support with dropshipping. Since you are not liable for order fulfillment, you cannot monitor when consumers receive their purchase.
If a customer decides to make a return, it’s a big hassle because you’ve got to make sure you pay back your money before you can make a refund.
Of course, there are often ways to solve these issues, but the solution usually requires either price hikes or a sales hit at the cost of consumer service.
Dropshipping Con # 5: Amazon Even Less Attractive
It was much tougher for businesses to market their products to the public before Amazon. Distributors, therefore, had to rely on conventional retailers and dropshippers to help them push the items.
Today, Amazon controls such a big slice of the ecommerce pie that most businesses would get by only selling as a 3rd party vendor on Amazon.
Amazon handles your sales, product fulfillment, and customer service … everything that would typically be taken care of by a traditional retailer. But the difference is the dealer gets to keep all the extra income!
It will be impossible to compete on price if you’re a dropshipped store selling the same products that can be found on Amazon. You’ll be having very little leverage as a result.
After all, would you instead purchase at a lower price from Amazon or pay more for buying from an unknown store?

Other business models in Dropshipping
All of the aforementioned dropshipping methods involve taking orders on your website and relying on legit dropship suppliers to fulfill your order.
Yet there are other dropshipping approaches that you should be aware of but are NOT recommended.
All the dropshipping methods described below are not good business models long term and should be avoided altogether.
Amazon to eBayDropshipping
Dropshipping from Amazon to Ebay has become common because it needs virtually zero upfront cost. You don’t have to have a website and all your sales come from Ebay.
And this is how it works
- You put up an Ebay listing for a product you want to sell at a price higher than Amazon
- You make an identical purchase on Amazon when a customer places their order and have it shipped to the Ebay customer
- You pocket the price gap
First of all, this form of Ebay dropshipping is no longer allowed, and if you’re ever caught, Ebay reserves the right to ban your account.
While dropshipping is legally legal on Ebay, they only allow dropshipping when a wholesale supplier fulfills orders directly.
You are NOT permitted to use Amazon, Walmart, or any marketplace to deliver your products.

Dropshipping From AliExpress to Amazon
Dropshipping is technically also allowed on Amazon, but a legit wholesale supplier must fulfill the order.
Like Ebay, Amazon reserves the right to block your account from a third party platform while you are trying to fulfill your order.
For the last couple of years, business owners “get rich quick” started dropshipping cheap junk from AliExpress on Amazon and pocketing the cost difference.
This process is called Dropshipping AliExpress, and here’s how it works.
- You put up an Amazon listing for any AliExpress product you wish to sell
- Once a customer places his order, you purchase the same product on AliExpress and get it delivered to the customer of Amazon
- You pocket the price gap
Please don’t try this business model as it relies on an ePacket shipping loophole that will soon be out of date.

While today I would never start a pure dropshipping shop, there are many ways to use dropshipping.
Since you don’t have to bring inventory, you can quickly build an online shop with hundreds of items in a short amount of time.
Then this shop can be used to perform market research. You can select and choose the most popular items to purchase inventory for and enjoy higher margins, depending on can goods sell well.
Dropshipping is best used as a tool to verify the product or fill out an online store sparse in some categories.
Overall, dropshipping is best used if…
- It would help if you had the validation of the product- Dropshipping is a great way to test new products at zero upfront risk. By running ads and checking the market quickly, you can decide if you want to go all-in on a niche product.
- You’re on a big budget-Dropshipping is by far the cheapest way to get started in ecommerce because you don’t have to pay or carry any inventory.
- You’re new to ecommerce – If you’re a newbie in ecommerce then dropshipping is a perfect way to dip your toes with minimal risk in the ecommerce waters.
- You want to bring a wide range of items – If you’re going to create a shop with tons of goods, the best way to go is to dropship. You can quickly start selling hundreds of products overnight, with only a few dropship suppliers.
When To Avoid Dropshipping
In general, dropshipping is not a reasonable option for experienced shop owners unless you are a brand new entrepreneur on a budget or an online store owner trying new items.
Since you sell the goods from other people, it’s hard to create your brand. There are so many aspects of your supply chain and customer service beyond your control, after all.
For example, you do not influence the customer’s unboxing experience, since your product will come in an unmarked brown box with zero brandings more often than not.
When an order is delivered late or never arrives, then you are to blame.
Often, you don’t have inventory access. When you have a product that sells hot, but the manufacturer is out of stock, you do not make any money.
In short, your company dropshipped lives and dies with your suppliers. When they aren’t active, then you’re not going to succeed.
So if your goal is to build a brand, dropshipping isn’t the way to go.
If any of the following describes your situation in general, then avoid dropshipping.
- You’re trying to build a brand – you’re selling the products of someone else with dropshipping, which means you’re not making a brand. And since distribution is not under your influence, when it comes to handling the customer experience, you have minimal sway.
- You want high margins- margins with drop shipped stores will always be an issue. Your advertising options are limited, with only 10-30 percent margins, and you will often have to rely on SEO or social media to promote your business.
- You want exclusivity – When you sell dropshipped products, hundreds of other vendors are likely to offer the same commodity that constrains your selling power. You may also end up competing head-to-head with Amazon and other bigger stores.
Is Dropshipping Working Fewer?
Arguably, when you have a trustworthy core of dropship dealers, the time that you save in not having to deal with inventory and distribution will be spent working with clients.
I forgot to say that many drop shippers don’t use a real-time API for automated supply chain technology. This entire means that you might not be alerted to whether a specific product is available for sale in real-time.
Therefore, if an item is out of stock, you’ll have to communicate with the customer to let them know when their products should be available. If your shopping cart is closely connected to your drop shipper’s database, maintaining an accurate inventory count would be hard.
For dropshipping, you trade off to deal with more consumer problems without having to deal with delivery logistics. And this may or may not be a smart tradeoff, depending on the temperament.
Although this article’s tone has been overwhelmingly anti-dropshipping, don’t get me wrong. Most people have succeeded in dropshipping because it fits very well for small specialty stores, but if you can; my personal opinion is to avoid it.
