PNG files contain raster images made up of pixels; while SVGs are vector images.
Vector graphics are composed of mathematical equations rather than individual pixels, making them infinitely scalable without losing quality at any size. You can convert PNG files to SVG using Photoshop’s free online tool or convert from PNG directly.
Open the PNG File
Photoshop might not recognize a PNG file you’re trying to open for conversion for several reasons. One is likely that your preferences have changed and Photoshop no longer recognizes them, while another could be that you are using an incompatible color mode (PNG files were designed specifically for screen use and do not support printing CMYK color modes), or finally an older version of Photoshop may simply not support PNGs.
To resolve this issue, change your file extension from.png to.svg and try opening it again with Photoshop. Or use an online photo conversion tool such as ConvertPicturesToSVG which offers faster and simpler conversion services than changing each photo manually – plus batch upload and convert them all at once!
Once you have an SVG file, you can insert it into your web design. It will look much better than an ordinary JPG and will be much more responsive and mobile-friendly – adding visual appeal and traffic.
By using a free PNG to SVG converter, it’s quick and easy to convert existing PNG files to SVG format without needing expensive programs like Adobe Photoshop. The online tool automatically rasterizes images into vector format before downloading as an SVG file that can be opened by any browser. Before starting the conversion process, be sure to duplicate your original png file just in case it doesn’t open after conversion.
If you have a newer version of Photoshop and are missing SVG format in the Export As menu, a couple of things could have happened. One could be that your preferences were accidentally reset to remove this option (edit > Preferences > Export and uncheck “Legacy Export As” option – to fix this, go into Edit > Preferences > Export and select the checkbox next to “Use legacy Export As”.
Select the Layer
SVG files are vector graphics, meaning they’re scalable and can be printed at any size without losing quality or becoming pixelated – unlike raster graphics which consist of individual pixels that must only be rendered at certain sizes without suffering quality loss or pixelation. If you need help quickly converting from PNG to SVG there are various free online converters that can do it quickly and easily for you.
Step one is to open your PNG image in Photoshop and select which layers need converting from there. You can do this by navigating to the Layers Panel at the bottom of the window, clicking it, then choosing from its list; or alternatively clicking directly on them within your picture itself.
Once a layer is selected, you have various editing tools at your disposal to transform it to suit your needs. From changing its opacity or adding a mask, to using layer styles menu to adjust image color and tone and trying out levels or posterize adjustments – when finished it’s important that all layers be merged back together so file sizes remain manageable.
An alternative option is using an online png to svg converter, which will let you upload your image and automatically transform it to an SVG file for use on websites or projects without Photoshop. You can try out this service free for 7 days!
Finalize the conversion process by downloading your converted file, either on to your computer or directly to your browser for web use. When downloaded, use it as an image background or incorporate into website designs – but be mindful of selecting smaller sizes as larger files may slow down loading processes on certain browsers.
Select the Image Assets
As your first step in creating SVGs, select the layers or groups you would like to convert by either clicking them in the Layers panel or using Ctrl/Option on Windows and Command/Ctrl on Macs. After they have been chosen, right-click and choose Quick Export as PNG from their context menu – this will open a window where you can adjust scaling options as well as include or exclude pixels-based layers or artboards from SVG export.
SVG files are vector graphics, meaning that they are created using mathematical equations rather than individual pixels. This makes them of higher quality and more compatible with web browsers and apps; PNGs on the other hand are raster graphics which consist of individual pixels – making them less suitable.
If you want to use images across various applications, converting them to SVGs will ensure the highest possible quality. Depending on your needs and personal preference, vector graphics editors such as Adobe Illustrator may be preferable or one of many free online tools may suffice.
Once your PNG files have been converted to SVGs, they can be used in any program that supports them and uploaded directly onto a website for sharing purposes.
SVG files can also be included as part of your website layout using CSS. This method is especially beneficial if your site utilizes a flat design style.

Select the SVG Format
SVG images are one of the best formats to use when it comes to images as they’re vector based, meaning no matter its size it will never distort or blur. Furthermore, SVG supports semi-transparent and transparent backgrounds – an essential feature if using your SVG for website use.
Photoshop makes converting SVG files simple with several methods, including using its export as function found under File, or by pressing Shift+Control+S (Windows)/Shift+Command+S (Mac). Once this option has been chosen, choose where to save the SVG and its format – it will then create the SVG file at your designated location.
Another way of creating SVG files with Photoshop is rasterizing layers. To do this, select one and go to Layer > Rasterize Layer; this will create a window asking you for dimensions of the rasterized layer and once completed click OK and your SVG will be created!
Photoshop makes the conversion of SVG files easy by providing its Generate function in its File Options or by going directly to File > Generate > Image Assets. Once generated, an “SVG” option will appear within your File Menu with a check mark allowing you to quickly save and access other image formats as well as SVG.
Once your SVG file has been created and saved in Photoshop, its code can be copied easily by right-clicking its layer and selecting Copy. This code can then be pasted into any program which supports SVGs.
