Wholesale clothing from China
Manufacturers of clothing and textiles don’t stock products. They offer production as an on-demand’ option. Some suppliers don’t keep fabrics, zippers and other components in stock. They procure materials according to the order.
Products made for the domestic market are the only exception. Some Chinese suppliers of textiles make their own products for domestic markets. For overseas importers, the “problem” is that domestic products are not labeled according US, EU or Australian textile labeling requirements. Importing wholesale textiles is therefore not an option.
So, why are clothing wholesalers still attractive to importers?
Manufacturers have a minimum order quantity (MOQ), while wholesalers do not.
How do you find a good Chinese clothing manufacturer
There are many textiles and clothing manufacturers that are not equal. It is possible to make a poor choice online and end up with a disaster. Here is a brief overview of the three most important factors when choosing clothing manufacturers from China.
1. Product scope
Suppliers are specialists in specific product categories and sometimes even materials. You need to search for suppliers that manufacture GOTS certified organic Cotton tee shirts if you want to import them.
This applies to all print techniques as well as other technical requirements. It is important to choose only suppliers who offer DTG printing if you plan to import DTG-printed t-shirts.
2. Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ), Requirement
Every supplier has a minimum order quantity (MOQ) requirement. If the MOQ of a supplier is 500 pcs then you will need to purchase at least 500 pieces or they won’t accept your order. There are three different MOQs in the textile industry.
- MOQ per Order: Normally, 500-1000 pcs
- MOQ per fabric: In normal cases 250-500 pcs
- MOQ per Color: In general 250-500 pcs
- MOQ per size: Normally 100-250 pcs
The MOQ is often the minimum quantity of fabric that the supplier must buy from subcontractors. You can lower the MOQ by using the same colors and fabrics on multiple products.
Additionally, custom-colored fabric, which is fabric that conforms to a specific Pantone color, tends to have higher MOQs than standard fabric colors.
3. Laboratory test reports (chemicals, heavy metals)
Most countries have regulations for clothing textiles, including Australia, Europe and the United States. The most applicable safety standards, like REACH (European) or California Proposition 65 restrict chemicals, heavy metals and pollutants.
Examples
- Lead
- Mercury
- Cadmium
- AZO dyes
- Formaldehyde
- Phthalates
Many Chinese manufacturers are unaware of the chemical content in their textiles, particularly the smaller ones.
This is a deeply-rooted issue that extends far beyond the manufacturer. Clothing manufacturers buy fabrics and components from subcontractors. There can be as many as hundreds of subcontractors for material.
To ensure that non-compliant materials are not slipped through, the supplier must test large numbers of samples. This is expensive and time-consuming for small factories.
Importers with bases in Europe, Americas, Canada, Australia and elsewhere in the world need to ensure that their supplier can provide test reports from an accredited third party like SGS or Intertek.
Reports on clothing tests
You can, for example, make a compliance assessment based on these documents:
- Test report REACH (SVHC).
- OEKO tex Standard 100
- California proposition 65
- Report on heavy metals testing
- Azo dyes test report
- MSDS
- Bill of Substances
4. Fabric quality
We were asked to manage the product development of a new collection of polo shirts for a European brand in 2011. The new designs were already being manufactured by a supplier from the southern Fujian region.
It was a reliable supplier. Clean facility with a long history.
After the samples were received, testing began. After a few weeks of use and washing, the client realized that the material quality was not up to his expectations. They wanted the sample to be comparable to Ralph Lauren and GANT in terms of quality but it would end up at an outlet.
Evidently, the client was unhappy and we filed a complaint with the supplier. They produced another batch of samples. The result was identical. We realized that although this supplier was reliable, they were unable to meet our buyer’s high quality standards.
They were skilled in low-cost apparel for the discount market and they were also very good at it.
Before you can get started, it is important to have your fabric specifications in place. Do not assume that a Chinese textiles and clothing manufacturer can make items to your specifications.
Get fabrics directly from fabric suppliers
In recent years, we have used a strategy to source two sets suppliers more often:
- Supplier A: Apparel manufacturer
- Supplier B: Material supplier
It can take a lot of time to rely on an apparel manufacturer for fabric selections and other material selections.
It can be difficult to communicate fabric quality requirements with a supplier. This can lead to weeks, or even months, of emailing back-and-forth to obtain the right fabric samples.
If you have particular fabric requirements, it is a better choice to find a fabric supplier directly and order samples. The fabric supplier will ship the materials to the apparel producer in the time required for production.
5. Audit Reports for Sedex and BSCI
BSCI, and Sedex both are manufacturers’ membership organizations that perform regular social compliance audits at factories around the globe. These core principles are the basis of the protocol that BSCI has implemented.
- The rights to freedom of association, collective bargaining and other rights
- Fair remuneration
- Safety and occupational health
- Young workers get special protection
- No bonded labor
- Business ethics
- Decent working hours
- No child labor
- No precarious employment
- Environment protection
Apparel factories that have been BSCI and Sedex audited are more likely to be managed well than those without such reports. This can be due to many reasons, but BSCI (SMETA), and Sedex (SMETA), audit reports are the main criteria that we use when sourcing textile factories in China, Vietnam and India.
FAQ
Is China home to the majority of clothing manufacturers?
The country’s clothing manufacturers aren’t concentrated in small clusters, but spread all across the country. These provinces have large garment manufacturing centers.
- Guangdong
- Fujian
- Jiangxi
- Zhejiang
- Jiangsu
Do you allow me to buy wholesale clothing directly from the manufacturer?
Clothing manufacturers make most of their products only when customers order them. They don’t stock any products and start making them when an order is received from foreign or domestic buyers.
What is the cost of manufacturing clothes in China?
The material cost, color, print, and labor costs determine the unit cost. The time required to cut, sew, and pack the product. Textiles do not have a standard pricing system. A t-shirt, for instance, can be made for as little as $1 or as much at $20 depending on its material.
Many times, we get asked to provide price examples for clothing. However, such data is useless unless the actual product specification is known.
How do I get a price quote from a manufacturer
Before you can receive a price from a manufacturer you will need to prepare your techpack.
Can I buy clothing made in China with brand names?
You cannot purchase authentic brand-name garments from Chinese factories. No matter if the brand is based in China, brand name goods are not ‘available for parallel importers.
