Amazon does it. Wayfair does it. Best Buy does it.
It is something you should also do.
No matter what niche you are in, there are certain marketing strategies that all ecommerce businesses should use.
It is possible to get related products in front your customers, which can increase your average cart value.
Displaying related products or other products on your Shopify product pages is one of the best ways to cross-sell.
It’s more than a feature that’s “nice to have” on your ecommerce site. It’s an essential part of your sales process.
This powerful tool will encourage customers to shop in your store longer and add one more item to their carts.
What are the related products?
Similar products are a very popular feature in ecommerce stores and a marketing tactic because they work.
What are they exactly?
Similar products are product recommendations that appear at the same time as a consumer’s current shopping.
These items might be used to complement or enhance the main product or provide spare parts or protection for the main product.
These items may be purchased by customers in addition to the main product.
Your system might recognize that many people purchase the same item as the SKU being analyzed. You may show recommendations under a banner called “People Also Buy”.
You have two options: either you can create these products yourself, or you can rely on sales data to decide which ones to display.
If you sell shampoo, for example, the products that are related could be the matching conditioner, shampoo brush, or hair towel.
In Shopify, the recommendations object is a Liquid object used on product pages to highlight an automatically-generated list of related products.
Data-driven approaches can be used to show the best product recommendations. This will increase customer discovery and increase sales.
It is common to include related product suggestions at product pages’ bottoms and during checkout.
Your goal is to make shopping easy by showing your customers the best products and services right on their screens.
It is quick and easy for shoppers to add an item to their cart. They also get to see products that they might not have thought of or searched for before.
Use related products on product pages for added benefits
Your business can benefit tremendously from the inclusion of related items in your product listings.
Your suggestions should be relevant to your customers and be based on their shopping habits.
If done right, you can build a relationship with customers, increase your average purchase value (AOV), and keep shoppers on the site longer. All this while offering a more personalized and satisfying experience.
Keep shoppers engaged
There are many factors that influence the buyer experience. These include how fast your site loads and how easy it is for you to navigate.
Your brand impression is based on your ability to quickly find what people are looking for and be delighted by discovering something new.
Your brand and your customers can both benefit from adding suggested items to the journey, no matter how much you want them to click directly from a product page to buy.
You can make customers stay longer on your site by recommending the right products. They will click through to find out more.
Tip: Pay attention to your bounce rate, which is how long people stay on your site before they leave. If you have a low bounce rate and high conversion rates, it can be a sign that your content is engaging and relevant.
Improve user experience
According to Retail Experience 63% consumers want a personal shopping experience online.
They believe that brands must understand customers’ shopping habits and provide tailored shopping experiences from start to finish.
Customers expect personalized marketing and personal touches when browsing your online store.
These expectations can be met by showing customers products that compliment items they have previously viewed, added or purchased.
The AOV should be increased
Your store’s AOV can be increased by personalized product recommendations
Salesforce shows that product recommendations drive 24% and 26% respectively of all orders, which is a clear indication of how product recommendations can lead to higher earnings.
Although the two concepts are quite different, this tactic of showing related products can be classified as either cross-selling or upselling.
Cross-selling is the promotion of related products that compliment the main product being considered by the customer.
Upselling refers to when you offer a customer a higher-priced version of the product.
In the related products section, you can either recommend one or both.
Cross-selling is a way for your customers to add more items to their shopping cart. Your customer will buy a higher-priced product if you are successful in upselling.
Both cases result in an increase in order value and revenue.
Showing related products to customers: Strategies
These are some great ways to get similar products in front your potential customers.
You can add a related product widget to the bottom of your product pages
The widget at the bottom is the most popular related product module.
This section is usually located below the primary product information in order to attract shoppers who are particularly interested in learning more.
This is Nomad Botanicals sharing products that compliment the main item.
Scroll down to see their complimentary product suggestions.
These usually show the thumbnail image, item name and price.
Target is another great example.
The related products are listed after the most important details about the item being viewed. We see the details, sizing charts and shipping information in addition to the recommended products.
Target’s recommendation products are unique because it has tabs that allow users to search for similar items by brand or type of clothing.
Sidebar: Feature Recommended Products
While it is less common, it is a smart way for suggested products to be visible by using the sidebar.
PANGAIA, for example, displays matching products right in front of customers while they scroll through its main product page.
Tip: You don’t have to limit your display options to the sidebar on a product page. Key items can be displayed on the sidebars of other pages, like your blog posts.
Make a page of recommended products
A recommendation products page is similar to , a collection page.
It is possible to collect similar items and place them on a page dedicated to search engines to help customers find the best products.
Larger stores may also consider offering user-based recommendations to customers who are logged in to their accounts.
They’ll be able to receive product suggestions based upon what they have looked at and purchased in the past.
Send an email with related products
Receipts and follow-up emails offer great opportunities to cross-sell and upsell.
Your brand can be promoted to more customers, you can share your recommendations and increase brand recognition.
Audible, for example, suggested audiobooks in an email notification that a book is available.
Show related products in the cart page
Customers who make a purchase already have proven that they will spend. Upselling should not be difficult.
You can show interesting products at the same time that customers are closing their shopping.
It is important to make it simple for them to add to their shopping cart, and to not interrupt or inconvenience their ongoing buyer experience.
REI does an amazing job of showing you five to six items that are directly related to the contents of your shopping cart.
You can see that there are many other options for Hydro Flasks in the cart.
Some items may not be related, but this could be intentional to provide variety.
Shop at Walmart and you will see many instances where related products are added throughout your shopping experience. The shopping cart is one example.
It’s also quite accurate: The cart instantly filled with a few other similar items after adding a baby booster chair.
You can see that the related products module is also a comparison tool for customers.
On product pages, include a section entitled “Customers Also Purchased”
The social proof can be used to encourage customers to consider buying the similar products widget.
Amazon is well-known for sharing the items that customers have purchased after purchasing a product.
It offers a concise, clear list of items that will pique buyers’ interest while highlighting star ratings as well as pricing.
This is because online shoppers trust other shoppers’ opinions.
Before buying, consumers want to make sure others are happy with their purchases. This is done by looking at reviews. They also find out what their friends buy (via word of mouth).
They want to make sure they don’t miss out on the best products.
How to add related products in Shopify
We have discussed the reasons why related product pages are important and how to get them in front your customers.
It’s now time to add those recommendations to Shopify.
There are three main methods to accomplish this.

- You can use a similar product app
- Code in a section

These recommendations can be easily leveraged by using a Shopify theme that has a built-in widget for related products.
You can “try before buying” so you can make sure that the layout and presentation of related products sections suits your brand.
Shopify themes often offer this functionality, and you can customize your theme to meet your needs.
You can find trendy styles and built-in suggestions in the Online Store 2.0 themes.
It is not possible to modify many vintage themes to include this functionality, but some (like Debut), have been updated to allow this functionality.
These are some themes that you could use to create related products.
This minimalist, chic theme places products first. It uses media-forward design to make your products more visible and appealing to customers.
