Euphorbia Pulcherrima is the botanical name or poinsettia, as we call it. It’s native to Mexico and Guatemala, Central America. The Euphorbiaceae family includes poinsettias. Many members of this family produce a milky sap. Karl Ludwig Wilenow, a German botanist gave Euphorbia Pulcherrima its botanical name. The plant grew from a crack in the greenhouse. He was awestruck by the plant’s color and gave it the name Euphorbia Pulcherrima, which means “very beautiful”.

The History of the Poinsettia within its Native Habitat

In their Nahuatl language, the Aztecs called this plant “Cuetlaxochitl” during the 14th-16th centuries. Cuitllatl is “residue”, and xochiti is flower. It’s “the flower that grows from the soil or residues”. Montezuma, one of the Aztec kings who died in the Aztec Wars, had poinsettias brought by caravans to Mexico City. The Aztecs considered the poinsettia a symbol for purity and used it to dye their clothes and fight fevers.

Don Juan Balme, a Spanish botanist of the seventeenth century, mentions poinsettias in his writings. The plant was found growing on the hills and valleys around Cuernavaca. The plant had large, green leaves and a small flower that was surrounded by bright red bracts. It almost seemed like protection.

The Spanish Franciscan Friars settled in Taxco, southern Mexico. They included red winter-grown blooms of the plants in Fiesta de Pesebre. The star-shaped leaf pattern, which is believed to represent the Star of Bethlehem, was called “Noche Buena”, meaning Christmas Eve. Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first United States Minister in Mexico (1825-1829), gave us the name poinsettia. Poinsettia plants were first introduced to America by Mr. Poinsett.

Poinsettias, small shrubs and trees that bloom in winter, are beautiful. They can grow up to 16 feet high. This plant has dark green leaves that measure between three and six inches in length.

Actually, the bracts that are colored in poinsettia plants’ flowers are actually leaves. The bracts may be colored in a variety of colors, including red, pink or orange. These bracts can be colored by photoperiodism. Many flowering plants use photoreceptor proteins, such as phytochrome and cryptochrome to sense daylight changing to darkness or photoperiod. These signals are used to signal that they want to bloom.

Many people are not familiar with poinsettia plants. They believe the colored bracts represent the flowers. The flowers, cyathia are found in the middle of each leaf bunch.

Many people consider poinsettia plants toxic. This is incorrect. Some people may experience mild skin irritations. Ingestion of any part of the plant can cause upset stomach, diarrhea, and vomiting. If the sap from a broken branch comes into contact with the eyes, it can cause temporary blindness.

History and Name of the Poinsettia Arrival to the United States in 1876

In 1828, Mr. Poinsett introduced the poinsettia to the United States. He had brought cuttings from Mexico to Greenville, South Carolina. These cuttings were shared with his friends and fellow horticulturalists.

Euphorbia Pulcherrima was originally named by Karl Ludwig Wilenow, a German botanist. William Prescott, a historian and horticulturalist was asked to change the name to Poinsettia in honour of Mr. Poinsett. His newly published history on Mexico, “Conquest of Mexico”, details the discovery of the beautiful plant by Mr. Poinsett in Taxco del Alarcon, southern Mexico.

Albert Ecke and Paul, his son, became interested in poinsettias. These plants grew wild in Southern California during the 1920s. Albert and Paul saw these plants as a great plant to introduce to the general public. Paul was still a strong advocate for the poinsettia being made the official holiday flower of Christmas. They began to grow poinsettia plants in their gardens and started selling them commercially. They sold the plants at first roadside stands in Hollywood and Beverly Hills.

The family relocated their business to Encinitas in 1923, just 2 hours from Los Angeles’ rapidly growing area. Encinitas was the ideal location to grow poinsettias because it mimicked the conditions in Mexico, where they can be grown wild.

They grew poinsettia mother plant fields and sent them to nurseries all over the country. These nurseries purchased the plants for future commercial cultivation. Paul personally traveled across the country to promote the plant to nurseries throughout the country and encouraged nursery owners in the promotion of the plant as a holiday bloom.

This changed when the first poinsettia cultivar that was commercially viable was created in 1963. It was best to grow it in a potted form and was then introduced to the general public. This change dramatically altered the way poinsettia plants were commercially grown and sold. The Ecke Family Business was one of the first to move indoors, from growing poinsettia plants in the fields to grow them in greenhouses. They started shipping via air freight, rather than rail.

Paul Jr. used television as a medium to promote bright red, later red and white, potted flowering plants. They were a regular part of every TV show, as well as all Christmas Specials. A holiday scene is incomplete without at least one poinsettia blooming plant.

Ruth Kobayashi continues to create new poinsettia hybrids today for the Ecke family. Dr. Kobayashi’s research led to the discovery of the most important poinsettia genes today. The introduction of ‘Prestige Red,’ a poinsettia that is known for its exceptional branching abilities and strong stems was made in 2002. “Prestige Red” quickly became the most popular red poinsettia. Current research continues to breed new species using the Euphorbia Genus. There are currently more than 100 poinsettia varieties.

These are the names of some of today’s most striking poinsettia colors: Cortez Red.

Commercial growers also have developed new plants that have long-lasting bract colors and can withstand poor watering. Today’s poinsettia growers have made plants that are more resilient to bruises and less fragile to ship without dropping their leaves. This allows them to arrive intact at retail stores and nurseries.

Initial care of your newly bought Plant ….

To protect your poinsettia plants from freezing temperatures on the return trip, wrap them properly.

It should be placed near a sunny window. Keep the temperature at 65 degrees F. Mist it daily with lukewarm. Use distilled water to avoid leaves getting splotchy from misting. The plant should be watered when it is dry to the touch. Allow the water to drain completely into the saucer. Drain all water from the saucer. The plant should be kept out of direct sunlight, drafts, and cold air.

Poinsettia After the Holidays ….

January to February– Water the plant when it is dry, and mist the plant every day (3-4 times). Misting the plant throughout the day creates humidity that is very appealing to poinsettias.

April– Reduce watering gradually to allow the poinsettia plants to dry out between watering. Be careful not to let the plant shrivel. During this time, stop misting. For a period of approximately four weeks, after your poinsettia has been dried out, you can move it to a basement or other place that is around 60 degrees F.

May– Trim the plant to a height of about 4-5inches above the soil, then repot in the next container. Sprinkle one tablespoon of bone meal on top. You can also apply slow-release fertilizer such as 14-14-14 or 19-6-12 to speed up growth. The transplanted plants should be watered with Superthrive or any other transplant solution that contains Vitamin B1. It’s now time to put your poinsettia plants in a sunny place where it can reach 65 degrees F. You can fertilize your poinsettia plant with an all-purpose fertilizer once every two weeks if you didn’t add a slow-release fertilizer during transplanting.

June – Take your poinsettia outside to a sunny spot and water it.

July – Cut each stem back about 1 inch at the beginning of the month. This will encourage poinsettias to grow and become bushy. Your poinsettia will grow taller if you don’t pinch its back.

August – Your plant should now have branched well. Now it is time to trim it one more time, so that each shoot has approximately four leaves. Continue with your fertilizing and misting.

September– Keep watering, fertilizing, and misting the soil.

October – Your poinsettia requires short days to produce buds so you must give it twelve hours of darkness beginning on the first of October. During this time, give the plant darkness between 5 and 8 a.m. every day. The leaves will remain green and won’t bloom if the poinsettias aren’t given additional darkness hours. You can place a black plastic bag or box over your poinsettia plants to block any light from reaching them. Move the plant outside during daytime to a sunny location and keep it watered, fertilized, and misting.

November Immediately stop using the dark treatment and let the plant enjoy its sunlit window. You should now be able see the flower buds.

December – Stop fertilizing in the middle of the month. Keep watering your poinsettia plants and misting them as you would after it was bought. Your poinsettia will be back in bloom by this point.

Poinsettias, like many tropical plants, can be successfully grown indoors if they are properly tested and followed. Poinsettia plants can be enjoyed for many months before it is time to plant the Easter Lily.
