What is transactional email?
Transactional emails are emails that are automatically generated by specific events or interactions on a website. This category includes an order confirmation email, which is sent automatically after someone has placed their order.
Because transactional emails are not part of a marketing campaign, they differ from email Marketing. They can be used to encourage customers to return or increase their lifetime value. These are important as they reflect your brand image and offer a last chance to communicate with customers before the transaction is complete.

Deactivate shopify order confirmation email not sending
Email marketing is still the best way to increase marketing ROI (ROI). It returns an average of $40 per dollar, almost twice the amount seen with SEO.
It has such a positive effect on a company’s bottom line and customers continuing to use it as their primary communication channel for making online purchases, it is definitely something that should be in your marketing arsenal.
There are more than marketing emails that sell products. Transactional emails are open and clicked-through at a much higher rate than other emails, which average 16.97%. On autopilot, this high level of engagement could translate into additional revenue.
The order confirmation email is one of the most important transactional emails. It is automatically sent to buyers following a purchase and confirms important information. Shopify sends an order confirmation email to buyers after they make a purchase. However, it is recommended to create your own order confirmation email as you grow your store so you can offer a more personalized experience.
Let’s build a Shopify order confirmation email if you are ready.
Template for Order Confirmation in Shopify
While your email may look exactly how you like, there are certain pieces of information buyers will expect to see. The Shopify order confirmation email template should include the following information:
- Thank you note and confirmation of your order
- Date the order was placed
- Details about the product, including price and quantity
- Total price
- Shipping addresses and billing
- Method of payment
- Shipping method
- The ‘view order” button will take them back to their store.
The Shopify email template includes all the information shoppers are expecting to see. However, you can increase the value of your email by adding other information, such as discounts or related items. This example is from Patch Plants. It starts with a GIF that shows the various types of plants that can take up space.
The plant owner will then receive helpful information, such as tips on caring for the plant and where to keep it.
Patch Plant cleverly includes links to its website in its email, increasing the chance of repeat purchases.
You don’t need to send only one confirmation email to Shopify. Customers expect to receive notification that their order has been shipped. You can then follow up with additional emails like:
- Notification of delivery
- Care tips
- Coupon codes
- Similar products
- Requests for review
Omnisend’s templates and automated workflows make it easy to create any number of emails and have them sent automatically after an initial action. Flexible parameters allow you to set up the workflow in any way you like. This could be a one-time order confirmation email or a series of emails that sends every other day and includes a request to the buyer to leave feedback for your store.
Shopify voice optimized
Transaktional emails are a representation of your brand. They should be consistent with your branding, just like any other customer touchpoint. Think beyond the order information when creating Shopify confirmation emails. Consider how your brand could be included. While Patch Plants used a GIF with a brand tone of voice, this example by Ipsy adds personality to the text.
An order confirmation email is a great opportunity to make a lasting impression on your buyer. Make sure you treat it with the same care as your website, social media and marketing emails. This consistency and seamless experience for visitors regardless of their interaction with you is the essence omnichannel Marketing.
Personalization of visual style
Consistency is a key concept in visual design. Your Shopify order confirmation email should not contain any blues or greens if your brand colors are oranges and reds everywhere else.
Visual style encompasses:
- Fonts. What font do you prefer? What fonts are available for headings, body text and subheadings? What are the sizes?
- Colors. What are the colors in your brand’s palette? How many colors are in your brand palette? Are certain colors used in particular ways, e.g. Only in featured images, or as a secondary colour?
- Patterns. Patterns.
- Image treatment. Are you a photographer who always has people in your pictures? Have you ever had them in your photos? Do your images look black and white or bright and vivid? Is your logo consistent in its placement?
- Variants of logos. Are there any versions of your logo that are specific to the space they’re in? Are you using text or an icon for your logo? How do you use the logo? What guidelines should you follow, such as how to place it, what dimensions and how to keep the color consistent?
There are no wrong or right answers to any of these options. However, the style of your Shopify store should match the choice of emails you send.
Cross-sell and Upsell Opportunities:
Transactional emails have an above-average open rate, making them a great place to offer upsells and cross-sells. Shoppers are more likely to return to a shop after they have established trust than to search for a new one every time. A purchase does not mean the end for a buyer. It’s just the beginning of a relationship.
Cross-selling allows you to offer additional products related the item that they have just bought. Take this example:
- They may be interested in beauty products if they have already purchased lipstick.
- A phone mount may be something they would like to have for their car if they already own a case.
- They may prefer different laces if they have purchased shoes.
Upselling is a different approach. It offers customers enhanced versions of the products they are interested in to increase their order value. McDonald’s is the most well-known example of upselling with its “Would it be nice to have that supersized?” question. Customers can order the same meal but with a supersize option.
There are many examples of upselling all around us: from delis offering to add a drink and cookie to your order to car dealerships offering extras such as heated seats.
Cross-selling and upselling allow you to increase your average order value without increasing your acquisition cost.
Reduce cart abandonment rates
Reducing your cart abandonment rate is a priority, as the Shopify order confirmation email does not get sent until a purchase has been made.
Many people don’t feel ready to make a purchase after their first visit. While some people may be able to remember to go back to your store, many won’t.
Omnisend allows you to send automated messages to your customers via multiple channels. This makes it easy to remind your customers about their abandoned cart using email or SMS. Omnisend syncs with both your Facebook and Google Ads accounts so that you can show the items they have added to their cart, along with a reminder for them to purchase. You could offer them free shipping or a discount to make the item more attractive.
Snatcher has found automated cart abandonment emails to be so effective that they are now a crucial component of their marketing strategies:
Take a bow
Although it may not be the most popular sales tactic, Shopify users can increase their revenue by sending an order confirmation email. The best part is that every buyer will get it automatically by creating a sequence asking for reviews and automating the email. Additional reviews can help you build trust with new buyers and increase your customer base. They will then see the order confirmation email. And so on.
