Imagine this: A customer is browsing through the product description on your client’s website. Although the customer is excited about buying the product, as they scroll down, they don’t see any buy buttons.
Soon, they realize that to find it, they must scroll back up to the top. In this moment, their excitement about buying the product is overshadowed when they need to search for the “add to cart” button. Your client could lose interest in the product and possibly lose a sale if this happens.
Even a small moment of hesitation can make a huge difference in conversion. This article will discuss a few methods to create a sticky “add to cart” call-to-action button which will be visible to customers as they scroll through the product description.

Frank Body’s website has a detailed product description that is both interesting and informative. The customer can scroll through the details of the product. The sticky “add to cart” panel can be found on the right. It contains the product’s quantity box and price. This clever design allows the customer to add multiple quantities to the cart without the need to search for it.
Code & Quill uses the sticky add to cart’ panel in their ecommerce shop. Their unique implementation allows customers to choose different product variants within the panel. Customers can choose from a dark grey or a white book cover in this instance. These include the price, quantity box and sharing option. These details could be attractive enough to encourage customers to look at related products.
Method 1 : CSS3
position was introduced in CSS3. is sticky. is a combination of relative and fixed positioning. Mozilla Developer Network’s documentation explains that an element is considered relative positioned up to a threshold at which point it becomes fixed positioned.
#one will behave like a relative positioned element until the viewport scrolls so that the element is less than 10px away from the top. It will then be fixed at 10px from top, until the viewport scrolls back past this threshold.
This is important to remember that although it’s easy to implement using CSS, it’s not supported by all major browsers (including Chrome). Can You Use gives us the following support chart for positioning: sticky;.
You can use position;, but you need to support other browsers. Check out this HTML polyfill from Filament Group.
Method 2 – jQuery Plugin
One thing is certain: we want our sticky “add to cart” panel to work in all modern browsers. We want our customers to enjoy the same shopping experience. We can use a cross platform jQuery Plugin to achieve this. Many jQuery plugins can perform the same functionality, such as Stickykit or Waypoints. But for this example, I will use Stable.
You should use jQuery plugins if you are new to front-end programming. They are easy to use and provide quality functionality. Sticky elements can be added to product pages by adding jQuery to the page and Sticky to the ‘add to cart’ panel.
When scrolled to, the above code will place our “add to cart” panel at 50 pixels from top of the browser window. Sticky can be used to make even more interactive interactions. There are many other calls that we can add using Sticky; check out Sticky’s Github page.
